Parent level by Alan Wills

March 14, 2017

"I am always amazed at how much artwork changes a game.  In some ways you want to create your game with bad artwork because you can otherwise be fooled in to the quality of your product.  Today, the parent level has gone from squares on a red background to something looking a little more like Mali (if you're squinting, in a dark room).  Nevertheless, things will only get better as David continues to hunt down more artwork.

Today, I've been working with tile maps - a concept incredibly common in 2D games.  Your map is constructed of many small interlocking tiles which come together to form a level.  When done well, they can produce incredible results - the best example I've ever seen HAS to be from
the game Golden Sun.  It still staggers me that that game was made on the Gameboy Advance.

I've also migrated the game over to an Android app, which again was relatively painless due to Unity's incredible Build tools. I shudder to think of the many development hours it must have taken to get this cross-platform creation working, but it truly is a piece of technological brilliance.

Roll on the parent level!"
